The Israeli airstrike resulted in at least 50 fatalities and 150 injuries, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, which described the incident as a "horrific massacre". Images showed people searching for survivors inside of destroyed buildings and scaling through multiple large craters. The Israeli military, which has been bombarding Gaza for three weeks, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Earlier, the military claimed that its ground forces had killed dozens of Hamas fighters during an attack on an outpost in the north and that they were fighting "fierce battles" with them deep inside the Gaza Strip.

According to Hamas, its fighters were engaging the advancing troops with machine guns and anti-tank missiles. Israel claims that this is the "second phase" of its campaign to destroy Hamas, which got underway on October 7 following an unprecedented cross-border gunman attack from Gaza that left 1,400 people dead and another 240 hostages. More than 8,500 people have died in Gaza since then, according to the health ministry, and the 2.2 million people who live there are seriously short on fuel, food, water, and medical supplies due to Israel's siege. According to Hamas, its fighters were engaging the advancing troops with machine guns and anti-tank missiles.
